A two-day workshop on an introduction to anodizing is April 8-9 in Los Angeles.
Anne Deacon Juhl, Ph.D.Anne Deacon Juhl, Ph. D., will teach “The Anodizing Masterclass: Introduction to Anodizing " at the Home2Suites in the Montebello area of Los Angeles.
Juhl says the anodizing workshop begins with a short investigation of the types of aluminum, “because knowing your substrate is of very high importance when aiming for a superior result with anodizing.”
During the two-day seminar — which has limited seating — Juhl will teach the anodizing process from pretreatment to post-treatment.
“The course will cover bath analysis, handling, quality control and various waste treatment options, along with other hot topics for today's professional anodizers,” she says. “Following this Anodizing Workshop, you will have a well-rounded understanding of practical anodizing, supported by an expanded knowledge about the fundamentals of anodizing in sulfuric acid.”
The fee is $950 per person. Registration can be made at https://workshops.aluconsult.com/funnel/64397/anodizingmasterclass-onsite-april-2025. The fee does not include lodging at the hotel.
The registration fee includes the on-site training and access to Juhl’s Anodizing School's Anodizing Masterclass e-learning course.
Juhl has worked in the anodizing industry for more than 25 years. Her anodizing journey started when she wrote her Ph.D. thesis as a research scientist at the Technical University of Denmark about, “Pulse Anodizing of Extruded and Cast Aluminum Alloys.”
After finishing her Ph.D., Juhl worked with anodizing as an independent consultant and as a supervisor and quality manager in anodizing companies. She has experience with different kinds of chemical and electrochemical surface treatments, such as chromating, electroplating, electroless plating and anodizing, including Type I, II, and III.

The Anodizing Masterclass - Introduction to Anodizing
April 8
- 8:00 am – 8:15 am: Welcome and Introduction to the Workshop “Introduction to Anodizing”
- 8:15 am – 8:30 am: Short introduction of Participants
- 8:30 am – 9:00 am: Aluminum and its alloys: Getting a basic idea of Aluminum and its alloys to get the best anodizing results.
- 9:00 am—9:45 am: History of Anodizing: What is anodizing, and why do we anodize aluminum? The various anodizing processes, including the sulfuric anodizing process, which we will concentrate on in the workshop, will give you a fundamental understanding of what is happening during the anodizing process.
- 9:45 am – 10:00 am: Break
- 10:00 am—10:45 am: Corrosion of Aluminum: This section provides a short introduction to aluminum corrosion and discusses the three most important types, helping you understand the issues associated with it.
- 10:45– 11:15 am: Handling and Racking: This is the first step in the anodizing process. Different possibilities will be shown, and we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages as well as troubleshooting.
- 11:15 am – 12:30 pm: Pretreatment: In this presentation, you will learn the fundamentals in pretreatment, such as cleaning, etching, deoxidizing and bright dip. We will talk about what you do in your own line. Why we pretreated and what happens, the chemicals and what can go wrong (troubleshooting).
- 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm: Lunch
- 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm: Anodizing in Sulfuric Acid: Now you know what happens with the aluminum surface before anodizing, so this is the time for an in-depth presentation about anodizing. Here you will learn all about what´s going on in the process, the influence of the various process parameters, the chemicals, temperature, and time. Topics will also include the importance of filtering, analysis of the anodizing bath, and testing and troubleshooting.
- 3:30 pm – 3:45 pm: Break
- 3:45 pm – 4:15 pm: Anodizing in Sulfuric Acid: Continued from before the break
- 4:15 pm – 5:00 pm: Troubleshooting, follow up, and tomorrow’s program: The day's final session will give you an overview of what we have talked about and what you will learn on day 2.
April 9
- 8:00 am – 8:15 am: Good morning and Welcome, short introduction to the day's program.
- 8:15 am – 9:15 am: Rinsing: One of the factors we sometimes forget is how important the rinsing step is. You will learn about DI, filtering, and double/triple rinse. Again, there will be a part about the defects you can find on the finished product, and how to avoid them.
- 9:15– 10:15 am: Coloring: This section introduces the anodized layer's coloring methods, including electrolytic, interference, integral, and organic coloring. It also includes troubleshooting when coloring.
- 10:15 am – 10:30 am: Break
- 10:30 am – 11:30 am: Sealing: This is the last step in the anodizing process. You will learn about different sealing methods, test, analysis and troubleshooting.
- 11:30 am—12:30 pm: Test/Quality: This section will help you with your quality control. Different standards will be explained, and ISO standards will be compared to military standards. NADCAP will be discussed regarding the attendance experience.
- 12regardingm: Lunch
- 1:30 pm – 2:15 pm: Waste treatment: Discuss various waste treatment methods and how to use the end products from the process.
- 2:15 pm—3:15 pm: Anodizing Equipment: How do you decide what kinds of equipment to use, what should your requirements be, and how do you best maintain it? A comparison between manual, automatic, and semi-automatic lines will be discussed.
- 3:15 pm – 3:30 pm: Break
- 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm: Troubleshooting: If you have brought any parts, we will look and see if we can find a solution.
- 4:30 pm – 5:00 pm: Closing remarks
